partnered with great people to help bring new and gently used shoes to Haiti.

Crazy how we've grown.

Spring is shipping

Regardless of weather we are entering into SPRING at Sole Obsession Footwear. I've been receiving confirmations all week that Spring has Shipped.

AHHHHH...new season's at Sole Obsession are my favorite. I've said it before but it really does feel like Christmas. I LOVE opening the boxes and seeing the new colors and styles that fill up the store and make it all feel so Spring-y! Spring is by far a favorite, the colors pop and scream sun.
(oh if only the weather would co-operate).

Alas, we must be patient with the weather. It is, after all, only January. But soon we'll have those lovely warm spring days and you're toes will be dying to show off. Visit us over the next few months and we bet you'll find the perfect sandal to help your little piggies shine.

Dansko's newest look for 2012...the Volley Canvas in Palm print and the NEW Professional Jutte in multi-colored stripe. So cute with those capris that are waiting to be ironed and brought out for another season. We think the Pro Jutte paired with a jean skirt is super cute for spring.

New resolutions are pondered...

I did a workout video and ran today ~
the first exercise I've done in a LOOOOONG time.

Annual New Year's resolution to exercise and lose weight? Check!

(And, yes, for the record I will be spending the rest of the day
soothing my aches and pains.)

At Sole Obsession Footwear we have many ladies come into the store complaining of foot issues, having "bad" feet, sore feet, back pain...you name it. That is why we attempt to carry comfort footwear that is also stylish.

In the November 2011 issue of Health Magazine there is an article titled "Are Your Shoes Killing You?" This article discusses the importance of finding shoes that fit well, are comfortable and have the proper level of support.

A few pointers when trying on shoes (here or anywhere):

Feet swell as the day goes on. Something that you try on first thing in the morning may not be comfortable by the end of the day.
Get your feet measured, if not everytime at least periodically, feet change as you age. I went from a 7.5 to an 8.5 in one short pregnancy!
Remember that sizes can vary between brands and within brands. It's true. It's not the size, it's the fit!
Wear the socks that you would normally wear with the shoes you are trying on. Don't have that weight sock on? Ask for one.
Go with your gut. You'll probably know within minutes if the shoe is the right shoe for you.

Take these pointers into consideration when picking out your next pair of shoes (we do with every customer!). We want you happy and comfortable. Happy feet make happy people!

Even though Jambu doesn't make size 12 shoes {insert disdain here} I have been lucky enough to fit two of their sandals. And lucky it is. These babies are so comfortable and so cute ~ they have definitely topped my favorite list. If you came in to the store at all this summer you most likely saw me sporting my Jambu Espy sandals. the perplexity of shoe store work

Well after a year-ish of working at Sole Obsession Footwear, Kelly finally decided let me have a go at this whole blog thing.

When I tell people I work at Sole Obsession Footwear I get one of three responses:
from the guys: "Oh you might know my wife. She loves it there."
from some of the ladies: "That's awesome! I'd love to work at a shoe store." (I do love it! I do!)
from the other ladies: "I could never work at a shoe store I'd buy all the shoes." (Um...yep that too.)

It is a dilemna. A perfectly wonderful dilemna.

Everyday I walk in and see shoes. Shoes I need, I want, I HAVE TO HAVE! But I can't really have them all, right? Seriously my bank account and closest can't contain all the goodness. So, each season I ponder. I weigh the options. I really, really, really try to keep it to two (or so....., really who are we kidding?) new pair a season. I look at what I already have and what would make the most sense. Then I go with gut instinct. I go with love!
This is boot season. It is the season of cool, wet and fun! I love autumn. I love winter. I love sweaters. I love boots!

And does Sole Obsession Footwear have boots? Oh yeah, many, many boots.

So, after careful consideration and lots and lots of trying on I think my decision is made and final. Really.

October = Breast Cancer Awareness Month

There are so many great causes to raise money for that sometimes it is hard to choose. Breast cancer just happens to be very close to my family and my heart. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 32 when I was only 2 years old {she later passed away at age 51 from a brain tumor}, my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 30's and passed away after a long, grueling fight at the young age of 41, my husband's mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 50's and I am so thrilled to be able to say that today she is "cancer-free" and living a healthy life now 13+ years later.

So October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and I am so grateful to the people who have been raising money for years to help fight this horrible disease that affects 12% or roughly 260,000 new women each year.

Time for something new

I'm the kinda person that will move all the furniture in my house around just so it feels different or drive to work a different way to change things up. That may be one reason why we are always trying new things at Sole Obsession Footwear. Some things stick around longer than others but for the most part I love change, newness, and diversity. So while the "Shoe of the Week" has been fun, we think it's time for something different. Something to change things up. The Shoe of the Week concept has been happening for close to 2 years now so it seems like a good time for a revamping.

So, what's the change? Instead of a shoe of the week we are going to showcase a "Brand of the Week". Providing you with great information so that you can feel educated as a consumer on the benefits and features of the shoes we carry. So each week we will feature a new brand, give you a little insight into what they offer, and, of course, have a sale on that brand too! We definitely haven't forgotten about offering great savings to our customers. :)

Here's a confession. I love new stuff. I can wonder through Target for hours just looking at the "new stuff" and dreaming about how I could fill my house with it. If I buy new dish towels, I smile every time I use them for at least a month.

Most of you will recognize this lovely face as the "other" face of Sole Obsession Footwear.

Cassi has been working at Sole Obsession Footwear since we opened. She was my first employee and has stuck me this whole time. Right there you can tell that this girl has tenacity. :-)

Cassi is now embarking on a new adventure and I couldn't be more excited for her. At the beginning of October she will be heading to LA to work on a YWAM base for a couple of months. While in LA Cassi will be working as a volunteer, supporting the staff and students that are attending the YWAM program. We would love to be able to support Cassi in her adventure and come along side her with some financial support.

It's that time of year again...when boxes start filling our stock room and new, wonderful shoes start filling our shelves. The store smells of fresh leather as we unpack new boots and fall shoes. We've dismantled the sandal displays and are now pulling out hay bales and Fall leaves. I can't believe it's already the beginning of Fall but, alas, we can't avoid the inevitable. I have never been to Las Vegas before but this year I am attending one of the biggest fashion conventions right in the heart of Vegas. It's called "Magic" ~ fitting right? Isn't Vegas where "magic happens"? I'm excited and a little nervous. I'm not really a Vegas kinda girl. I'm a hometown values kinda girl. I've been told by Jerrie that I will have to get over it because Vegas is...well...Vegas. She's assured me that the shock value will wear off after the first day. And the rest of the time I'll be inside convention centers so hopefully I won't come back too jaded. :-)

Many people are wandering through the store and wondering why there are so few men's shoes around. Here's the scoop...men tend to be a bit more practical in their shoe buying. The like to plan a trip to buy pants, shirts, and shoes at the same time. Yes, not all. There are definitely exceptions ~ my husband being one of them. But for the most part a guy doesn't pick up his buddy and go "shopping" for the afternoon. It's not a common occurance. Letting go of men's shoes has been a tough one for me. When I started Sole Obsession Footwear I wanted to be a family shoe store. But anyone in business knows that you have to be flexible and after almost 3 years of business I am finding that it will benefit our store to put 100% focus into the ladies! Thankfully we can always do special orders so if you know a "shoe guy" in your life, we can still get in his favorite Keen's or maybe a new pair of Merrell work shoes. Just ask to see one of our catalogues and we'll hook him up.

So what does the future hold? Ladies, you can expect some great changes to take place. We're sprucing things up, ordering more accessories, and creating the ultimate women's boutique. This fall keep on the lookout for more fashion, comfort and selection. With the men's gone we're able to order more styles to keep you looking great. We know you will be thrilled with the fall styles.

Razz, Jazz, and Basketball?

Seems like a strange combination but that's what happens at the Northwest Raspberry Festival and it's a "berry" fun time. The Raspberry Festival takes the fun summer festival idea and intertwines it with a city wide basketball tournament. From 4 year olds to 40 year olds, you can find all different types of teams to watch duke it out on the courts that are set up along Front Street. This 3-on-3 tournament creates a fun, competitive atmosphere all weekend long. After you take in a game or two you can stroll along Front Street and grab a bit to eat at one of the delicious food vendor booths at 4th and Front and then do some shopping at the open air market located at 6th and Front. You can take in some more shopping at the local shops all along Front Street.

Its a fun-filled two days! We'll be at the booth from 10-8 on Friday and from 8-5 Saturday. Our store will still be open during regular business hours. You'll find great sales that you can't live without at both locations. So stop by and visit us at our booth in the open air market! See you there!

What's goin' on around here?

I love living in a small town. Why? Because, my sign was taken down yesterday morning at around 10am. By 11:30 I had a customer walk in and say that she was told by her friend, who heard from her friend that Sole Obsession Footwear was going out of business. Yes, folks, that's right. It only took 1.5 hours to create that rumor. Here's the reality...we are NOT going out of business. We ARE getting a brand spankin' new sign. A super cool, ultra awesome sign that lights up at night and shows the world that Sole Obsession Footwear is still in business. I'm excited to see that finished product. In the meantime I've addressed the "going out of business" question more times than I can count. And all because my sign came down. Not because my store is lacking shoes, not because I have a liquidation sign on the corner, no...because we are upgrading. I think it is going to be great for business. A rumor = people talking. That can't be all bad. Right?!

New Dankso "Sprig"

What else have we been up to? Well, unloading new fall stock that has been arriving. We got some new fall Dankso's in today. Some new Simple sneakers. And lots of new scarves and hats. And it's just the beginning. By mid August we will have in more fall styles including scads of boots. I cannot wait. Strike that...I can wait for fall but I can't wait for fall shoes. I love new styles and I love seeing them show up and fill the shelves in our store.

Other things on our agenda...we are getting prepared for the Raspberry Festival coming this weekend to a super cool small town near you. The Razz Fest is my favorite Lynden event. So much fun, so much ice cream covered raspberries, it is the perfect summer weekend. If you haven't attended you should add it to your calendar and come check it out. It's a good ol' time and we'd love to see you. Sole Obsession Footwear has a booth downtown each year. (Here is a picture of our booth last year.) This will be our 3rd year and we are excited to spend some time in the sun visiting with people that are strolling down Front Street. Our store will be open as well so you can get hooked up with great shoes at both places.

Happy Belated 4th of July!

This year my husband had to work so the kids and I spent our 4th of July holiday playing in the water out at Semiahmoo. The tide was out, the sunshine was warm and beautiful, and my 3 hooligans couldn't have been happier playing in the water; discovering sand dollars, fish and other sea creatures. We ended with dinner and a fireworks show at our friends place in Birch Bay. It was a great day!

So what about you? What did you do for the 4th? What are your family traditions?

If you are anything like me, getting back into the swing of things after a long weekend can be kinda tricky. Yesterday I completely forgot about our Shoe of the Week.

More on the barefoot craze

There is an ongoing debate in the footwear world about the benefits versus risks of barefoot running.
I often peruse articles to learn the latest thoughts about this topic.
Today I came across a new article discussing the foot injuries that this type of training can cause. It has some great information about what type of feet are suited for barefoot or minimalist running shoes and which feet should have more support. If you are interested in starting a minimalist running routine but need information on how to start and if you have the right feet, come in and ask us to help. Running month

Have you seen our window yet this month? It's all about running.

Running is the hottest sport going right now. People are training for marathons, 10K's, 5K's ~ you name it and people are out running it.
